Engaging Social Enterprise

A purveyor of social enterprise recently sent us an article from Forbes magazine about a former Hershey executive named Don Larson. This man, somehow was able to navigate the success of capitalism and greed based consumerism of the Western 'developed' World and still have a heart for something greater than selfish ambitions. We are largely taught that we work, acquire and spend for ourselves. Yes, we give but 10% is all that is required but even with this, you may be adhering to too much religious legalism. Reading about the life decisions of this man and the social enterprise of Sunshine Nuts has greatly inspired me to continue the efforts of CWA with all diligence. The pathway of Good is almost never easy or comfortable. It hurts and it seems damning and suppressive in nature. The natural mind asks, "Why give away that which I have earned? Why should those that do not have receive anything from me?" Most cannot fathom the plights of those without so cannot properly empathize with poverty, inequality or economic injustice. It just has never hit home. On the other hand, those whom have made it out of economic depravity are rightfully relieved but in some ways now carriers of entitlement and privilege, who feel disconnected from what was once a reality but now a distant memory at best. The mentality is unbroken and change unrealized. The reality remains for both sides and none are the better. But this guys gets it. Voluntarily transitioning from the comforts of America and a leaving an executive position in a company where some executives were making upwards of $10Million US a year, he put it behind him to help those that, in their present state, could not help themselves. I do not know this man personally, but this type of transition and higher level thinking is what changes our world for the better. The world does not need more higher earning executives or major corporations widely exceeding investor expectation. The benefactors of this system is a small microcosm of humanity who typically possess a skewed veiwpoint of the world. While no one is faulting them, since all you know is what you have experienced, we can at least give honor to whom is due and be encouraged to live lifestyles worthy of something greater than ourselves. The universe commends Sir Don Larson of Sunshine Nut Co, where ever on Earth you are, and may many more be inspired to become such a leader.
